On Monday Arturo Omar Rodriguez, 48, was formally arrested and charged for the murder of his wife, Mariela Yazmin Alpuche, 34. Alpuche was choked to death during a fight between the couple which occurred in a hotel room in Independence in Southern Belize.

What initially started out as a family vacation for Mariela Yazmin Alpuche, her two daughters and her common-law husband turned into a nightmare after her lifeless body was discovered on a bed inside a hotel room in Independence Village at around 2:00 Monday morning.

On Monday afternoon, Police reported that they were in the process of gathering witness statements from Alpuche’s family members who were staying in other rooms at the same hotel. According to Head of the National Crimes Investigation Brach ACP Joseph Myvett, Rodriguez was allegedly the person who went looking for family members to tell them what had happened.

A preliminary Police indicated that sometime between the hours of 1:00-2:00 a.m. Alpuche and Rodriguez were inside a room in the Panting Hotel in Independence Village when they got into a domestic-related argument which ended in Rodriguez choking her to death.

Alpuche’s eldest brother, Wilfredo Majano spoke to the Reporter on Monday evening, stating that “My mom decided to go and use the bathroom and at the same time passed and knocked on her door to find out if she already went to her room. That is when she opened the door and found my little sister lying unconscious in the bed. They later declared her dead when she reached the hospital. One of the babies was with her sleeping and her husband was in the room.”

Majano confided to the Reporter that the reason for the quarrel between the couple is still not certain. He claimed that the family was not aware if the couple was having any domestic-related issues prior to the incident, since they appeared like a normal happy couple.

Family sources also told the Reporter that Alpuche was a family-oriented mother that loved her two daughters and mother dearly. She was also a jovial person who would strive to make others happy and apart for her love for make-up would spend her days assisting her husband in his carpentry business in Orange Walk.

She leaves behind two daughters, ages 5 and 12.
