This afternoon Belize City construction worker, Nisani Daniel Garcia, 24, was formally charged for the murder of Alberto Vargas Jr., 21, shot twice to his neck on Tuesday night while inside a parked vehicle on the Belize Corozal Road.
On July 10th, at around 7:30pm Vargas, a resident of the Louisiana Area of Orange Walk, was inside a vehicle driven at the time by Jose Medina. They allegedly made one stop to pick up a passenger known to them before stopping for food at a popular vendor located in front of Landy’s and Sons store on the Belize/Corozal Road.

Police accounts are that Vargas was seated in the passenger’s seat of the green Ford Escape while the gunman sat directly behind him. Reportedly, shortly after the trio arrived in front of the food stall an argument erupted between Vargas and the gunman, followed shortly after by the sound of at least seven gunshots.

Medina, who was detained by authorities for questioning following the murder, indicated to Police that in fear for his life he had alighted the vehicle when the commotion escalated and when he returned he observed Vargas in a leaning position, bleeding profusely from two gunshot wounds to the left side of the neck. Medina then reportedly got into the vehicle and drove Vargas to the Northern Regional Hospital, where he died from his injuries at 8:20pm.

Witnesses who were standing in the area says that the events unfolded quickly, and after the gunshots subsided, an unidentified male person was seen running away from the vehicle.

At a press briefing on Thursday, ACP Joseph Myvette, Head of the National Crimes Investigations Branch says that Police are probing several motives for the shooting, among them reports of a drug transaction gone wrong.
Cops recovered two 9mm expended shells from the scene, four expended shells in the rear passenger seat of the vehicle and a single slug on the dash board.

Last year the deceased and Medina were both charged with drug trafficking after they were intercepted in Trial Farm Village transporting five parcels of marijuana, amounting to ten pounds.
