Four of the five contestant vying for the upcoming 2018 Miss San Pedro title, including the reigning queen and four of their chaperons who were returning home to Belize, were involved in a traffic pile-up between Playa Del Carmen and Chetumal, Quintana Roo on Sunday night.

The contestants, identified as Seleny Borges, Janelly Aban, Daisy Martinez and Chelsea Muñoz, along with the reigning queen Virginia Vasquez and their chaperones Shamir Guerrero, Andy Nuñez, Yakarelis Hernandez and Councilor Flora Ancona did not sustain any major injuries. Hernandez, who was reportedly sitting in the front passenger seat of the vehicle, sustained minor injuries due to the deployment of the airbag.

Reports are that around midnight on August 19th the delegation was returning from Playa Del Carmen where they had spent the entire day shopping and were travelling in a chartered van towards Chetumal when upon reaching the intersection of the highway Federal Reforma-Puerto Juarez Kilometre 8 a blue Toyota vehicle came speeding out of a dirt road and slammed into the side of the van.

The impact caused major damage to the van which was transporting the Belizean beauty ambassadors. Passengers on board reported that the driver of the speeding vehicle appeared to have been under the influence of alcohol and completely disregarded a stop sign at the intersection of the highway. The driver reportedly fled the scene of the accident, leaving three of his injured passengers trapped inside the Toyota.

The Belizeans were assisted by the Consul of Belize in Quintana Roo and though none of them were injured they were all transported to a clinic in Chetumal for further medical checkups. They returned to Belize on August 21st.
