LIGHTNING STRIKES CHILD IN TOLEDO
August 23
18:59 2018

A girl, age nine, was struck by lightning while sheltering from rain today and died; while her older sister who stood three feet away survived with minor abrasions.

The incident happened in the very remote Maya village of Na Lum Ka, Toledo, sometime around noon, while the deceased, Silvia Bol and the older sister, Manuela Bol, 14, both students, were sheltering under a Cohune tree from a heavy downpour when lightning struck Silvia on the right side of her chest and right hip, burning off her clothes in the process. Manuela, who was near her, received just minor abrasions on her right hand and scratches on her right leg.

There are no reports that the girls’ mother, who was washing clothes in a nearby creek some 12 feet away, suffered any injuries.
