The lives of several bystanders in the usually bustling strip near Fibber’s food stop near the intersection of Cemetery Road and Johnson Street were put in real danger on Tuesday night when two armed men fired as many as seven high-powered shots into the crowd.

While the location would usually be packed with people buying food, on that particular night it seems that the gunmen came for a specific target and unleashed their firepower directly at Matthew Smith, 30, injuring him once to his right upper arm.

On Thursday, Officer Commanding the Crimes Investigation Branch ASP Alejandro Cowo stated that “the way that Smith had reported to Police we believe that yes he was the target as he had mentioned that the person had gone almost directly to him and pointed the firearm from a distance.”

Cowo additionally mentioned that since the shooting authorities have been investigating but are having problems coming up with a motive since he has indicated to them that he does not know why anyone would want to target him since he is not involved in any gangs, nor does he have any personal beef or conflict with anyone.

Prior to the shooting which occurred at around 9:50 p.m. on August 28th, Smith had just placed his order at the food outlet and was waiting for it when two men rode up on a bicycle from the direction of Johnson Street and fired directly at him.

An off-duty Police Officer who was also standing at the establishment pulled out his licensed firearm and returned fire at the men, sending them scrambling for safety, a move which Police say probably prevented further injuries and possible casualties.

One of the gunshots fired from the gunmen a .45 bullet pierced the wall of Fibbers and exited the other side. “The Police’s primary function is the protection of life and property so in the event that he is present when anything happens he has the right to defend anybody as well as himself and if any injury or damages is caused to any person then it is a situation that we will have to deal with likewise,” asserted Cowo.

Smith was admitted, treated and released from the hospital on the following day and is now recovering at his Johnson Street home. On the scene police recovered seven .45 expended shells. There are still no suspects for the shooting.
