POLICE DENY SHAKEUP

POLICE DENY SHAKEUP

REPORTER: News Staff, Jan 11th. -

Early this afternoon, reports of a massive shakeup in the top ranks of the Police Department circulated. A leaked document claimed that 13 officers, from the ranks of Assistant Superintendent of Police all the way up to Acting Deputy Commission of Police, would be moved from their current posts, effective immediately.

Some of the more notable transfers included Acting Deputy Commissioner Edward Broaster, moved from Commander Administration to Commander of National Operations, He would be replaced by Assistant Commissioner of Police Robert Mariano, moving over from his post as Commander of the Eastern Division. Very notable was the move of Sr. Supt. Howell Gillett, who was recently brought in from Belmopan to be Commander of the Southside. Gillett, according to the document, would move back to Belmopan as head of the Special Branch.

By 4:00pm today, the Police reacted to the document going viral. In a post in a chat group shared with the media, they stated that “It was brought to our attention that there’s a circulation of a document that lists reshuffling and postings of Senior Police Officers in the Belize Police Department; we ask that this document be disregarded, as the Commissioner of Police Chester Williams is in constant dialogue and communication with his Senior Officers, and command. In light of this, the Commissioner of Police will make his official announcement to the general public of any changes within the department during the course of the 3rd week of January, 2019.”

But an hour after that, Sr. Supt. Howell Gillett confirmed at least his transfer on his Facebook page, confirming that he had been called back to Belmopan and would be replaced by Supt. Daniel Arzu. He took down that post shortly after.

Sources inside the Department say that the document is accurate, or at least mostly accurate, but the leak pre-empted a proper transfer. We’ll keep following this story and provide more clarification as we get it.
