The family of Selbert Butler, a Belizean receiving medical treatment in Merida, is asking the public’s assistance in raising funds to cover the cost of a life-saving surgery.

The family has started a Go Fund Me page, and is calling for donations of any size in an effort to raise some US$18,000. Butler took ill in December 2018 and was hospitalized for a week. After spending three days at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital and another four days at Belize Medical Associates, doctors explained to Butler that he was gravely ill and needed medical attention that he could not receive in Belize.

Doctors in Belize coordinated with those at Star Medico Hospital in Merida, Yucatan and Butler left via ambulance to try and receive treatment. While in Merida, doctors diagnosed Butler with having several tumors on his adrenal glands, which was causing unmanageable elevation of his blood pressure.

Doctors additionally diagnosed Butler with having bleeding in the brain resulting from a stroke. His family explained that on Thursday, he went through a surgery called an adrenal laparoscopic excision and successfully had the tumors removed.

“The surgery is over but as you know Sellie still needs to cover the surgery’s expenses and so every bit will be appreciated,” Butler’s family wrote in an update on the Go Fund Me page.” For those who wish they could assist but are unable to, we thank you as well, and we ask that you hold Selbert in your heart and prayers, so that with God’s grace he will be healed.”

They also thanked those that have donated thus far and offered prayers, and support during the family’s difficult time. Those interested in making donations can do so through
