Two Charged in Aragon Kidnapping

Two Charged in Aragon Kidnapping
January 18
14:49 2019
REPORTER: News Staff, Friday Jan. 18th. -

A man and a woman have been charged with “Handling Stolen Goods” after they were found with the remote control for the gate that borders the home of Elodio Aragon Sr., who is the father of the Minister of State in the Ministry of National Security, was attacked by two men and kidnapped from his house behind the People’s Stadium in the Orange Walk Central Constituency sometime between midnight and 1:00 last week Thursday morning.

The two are Renald Hernandez, 26, of San Jose Palmar and Rachel Lawrence, 19, of Orange Walk Town. We have not been able to establish if the Police believe they were in any way linked to the actual kidnapping incident.

Elodio Aragon Sr., 70, was sleeping inside his house when two men woke him up, blindfolded him, robbed him of his cell phone, wrist watch, wallet containing his bank and identification cards and money, and his vehicle. The two men then forced Aragon in the vehicle and drove him to an isolated area on the Posito feeder road several miles away, where they released him.

Aragon walked some two miles back towards Orange Walk and several hours later, a fellow resident stopped for him and took him to safety.

Police investigations revealed that the kidnappers broke in the property through the back entrance and removed louvres from a window on the upper flat.

Police had initially detained an 18 year-old youth, but later released him after there was nothing to show that he was linked to the incident.

Elodio Aragon Sr., served as the UDP’s Minister of Education under the Manuel Esquivel regime from 1984 to 1989 and from 1993 to 1998.
