Guatemalan Gunman Sought by Police

10:36 2019 NEWSPAPER-Feb.7th.-

The lives of Customs personnel and personnel from other border agencies stationed at the Belize Western Border came under serious threat early Thursday morning following a bizarre attack by a Guatemalan denied entry into Belize.

Belizean authorities have confirmed that while there were no reported injuries they remain in close contact with their Guatemalan counterparts to secure the arrest of Anibal Avila, a resident of Barrio Suchitan in Melchor for unleashing multiple live rounds at Customs officials on February 7th.

On Thursday, ACP Joseph Myvett, Head of the National Crimes Investigation Branch stated that, “This morning, sometime around 2:30 a.m. Customs officials at the Belize Western Border reported that two Hispanic males on motorcycles approached the Customs building. One person attempted to enter the building to cross but he was refused entry into Belize several times and as a result, he then went back towards the Guatemalan Border where he turned around and fired several shots toward the direction of the Customs building.”

Myvett told the press that officials at the border are familiar with Avila since on multiple occasions he has attempted to cross the border without proper documentation.

Avila also has previous arrest records in Belize and in 2016 he was arrested and charged for being in possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition while inside the free zone.
