Piss House’ Pimped Out – Detention Facility Renovated

Thursday, March 7th.

The nasty, unsanitary, likely disease ridden and inhumane cellblock at the Queen Street Police Station in Belize City is a thing of the past. The entire area on the bottom floor is currently getting a much-needed facelift and works which will be finished in the next couple of weeks. There is no doubt that the living conditions of the ‘guests’ placed on lockdown will be much improved.

The renovation and re-modeling commenced two weeks ago, and so far has included the scrubbing and repainting of the feces caked walls, the installation of stainless steel commodes, as well as the installation of shower stands, concrete seating and the plastering and raising of the floor.

At the end of January, the Belize Police Department came under major fire from the Human Rights Commission of Belize as well as the public who were shocked to learn of the unsanitary conditions that prisoners were forced to endure while on lockdown.

Pictures posted on Facebook by Police Officer Darrel ‘Tutsi’ Usher while he was incarcerated for two days inside the cell showed feces caked walls, filthy toilets running over and smeared with human waste, as well as sewage water leaking over the entire flooring which prisoners were forced to sleep on.

In the aftermath of the leaked photos, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams met with the media and noted that prior to the pictures he was aware of the situation and had already made arraignments with a private contractor to provide him with an estimate so that renovation could commence.

Williams also told the media that the leaked pictures had nothing to do with the hasty upgrade, and this week stated – “I have said before that the cell block was going to be renovated. I am a man of action; when I say I am going to do something I do it. The cell block renovation is well underway. It should be finished in the next week or week and a half, and whenever it is done, I am inviting a representative from each media house to spend a night in the cell block. And you must tell me the next morning if it is suitable for the criminals to be in it.”

The Reporter thanks the Commissioner for his kind offer, but we don’t think we’ll be taking him up on it.
