Caye Caulker Resident Charged

Caye Caulker Resident Charged
March 22
12:50 2019

Ephrain Pook, 30, a resident of Caye Caulker, was arraigned on Monday morning in the San Pedro Magistrate’s Court on multiple charges for injuries he allegedly inflicted on two brothers who accused him of breaking into their home and stealing from them.

Over the weekend Pook was charged with two counts of attempted murder, one count of use of deadly means of harm, one count of maim and one count of dangerous harm.

The charges stem from an incident which occurred on the Northside of Caye Caulker around 6:00 p.m. on March 14th, when Pook allegedly chopped Tito Rosado to his head and hand, severing one of his fingers in the process. Pook is also accused of stabbing Lahji Rosado to his back with a knife.

Family members of both men told the Reporter that following the incident the brothers were airlifted to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for treatment. Tito was treated and released the following day while Lahji remains hospitalized due to internal bleeding caused by his injury.

Those family members claimed that around five that evening both of the victims arrived home and found out that their home was burglarized and all their groceries, clothing and other personal items were missing.

The family said that because the brothers knew that Pook had stolen from them before, they went looking for him to confront him about the latest incident. When the men eventually found Pook they accused him of being responsible for the break-in and that was when Pook got enraged and went into some nearby bushes, where he recovered a machete and a knife which he allegedly used to attack both men and inflict the injuries on them.

The family believes that the incident could have been averted if authorities on Caye Caulker had followed up on multiple complaints that the victims had attempted to file against Pook for his behavior. Furthermore, the family says that Pook is claiming that he is a mental patient but they believe that it is just an excuse that he is using to justify his actions.

ASP Alejandro Cowo, Officer Commanding the Crimes Investigation Branch told reporters that there was only so much that the officers could have done – “It is being said that the suspect is a mental patient, however there is nothing definite to say that he is. We know that Caye Caulker Police have always been assisting him in getting his injection on a timely manner and that he had already been removed from the island because of his behavior, but apparently he went back.”
