Police Corporal, Mark Martinez, 38, was assaulted and robbed of his Police-issued firearm early this morning in Belize City.

The Reporter has learned that sometime around 2:00 this morning, Martinez got involved in a dispute and a struggle with one of three men over his service weapon when a vehicle stopped in front of him on Newtown Barracks.

The incident happened when the men, who were standing on the sidewalk, became disrespectful towards Martinez after he blew his horn for the vehicle in front of him to move on. The men reportedly approached Martinez, at which point he drew his weapon and fired two warning shots.

However, one of the men reportedly grabbed the gun and they started to struggle and Martinez was struck in the head, causing him to fall down. The three men then reportedly got into a grey Nissan pick-up truck and drove off with the gun.

We understand that surveillance cameras in the immediate area might have captured the incident.
