One man is in Police custody and possibly facing charges for a hit and run accident in Belmopan over the weekend which claimed the life of elderly Guatemalan national Pablo Hernandez, 63.

Just after 7:00 p.m. on Sunday Belmopan Police were called out to the Hummingbird Highway, within city limits near Caribbean Chicken where they observed Hernandez’s lifeless body lying near the highway.

ACP Joseph Myvett, Head of the National Crimes Investigation Branch, told the media that “Initial investigation revealed that Mr. Hernandez was riding his bicycle northbound when he was apparently knocked down by a vehicle from behind. The vehicle did not stop, and it was later intercepted by Hattieville Police. So, that vehicle is now impounded, and one person is in custody pending the conclusion of this investigation.”

Family members of the deceased told the media that Hernandez was on his way home to deliver food when he was knocked down. The family says that they personally know the driver and he has reportedly expressed his sympathies to them.

While Police gave a different account of how the suspected hit and run driver was apprehended, the Reporter was informed that following the incident Belmopan Police had issued a notice for officers to be on the lookout for a red Honda CR-V vehicle. The vehicle had reportedly left behind pieces of shattered glass, bumpers and mirrors on the scene.

Unconfirmed information to the Reporter suggest that by the following day a red vehicle fitting the description showed up at a body works shop with its front windshield completely broken out, damages to its side portion and front bumper. The condition of the vehicle raised concerns by residents in the vicinity and authorities were called in to investigate. The suspected driver of the vehicle was apprehended.

Police are still investigating whether the victim swerved into the driver’s lane or what led the driver to knock him down. To aid in that part of the investigation Police say that they have extracted blood samples from both the suspected driver and the deceased to determine whether any of them were consuming alcohol at the time of the accident.
