A farmer and his wife from San Narciso Village in the Corozal District tragically perished in a horrific road traffic accident on Wednesday afternoon, after a freightliner tanker truck collided into their pickup between miles 72 and 73 on the Phillip Goldson Highway.

From the shocking pictures of the mangled Ford Ranger pickup truck and the damaged Freightliner tanker truck, it was apparent that passenger in the pickup Romana Chan, 71, did not have any chance of survival. Sources say that the elderly woman’s battered and broken body was carefully extracted from the wreckage by first responders and placed under a bus stop where she died shortly after.

Chan’s husband and driver of the pickup truck, Audomaro Chan, 74, who also sustained massive head and body injuries, died while being transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for treatment. Chan was officially pronounced dead on arrival at 3:39 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29th.

The Belize Police Department claimed that around 1:15 p.m. on May 29th the elderly couple was driving their pick-up truck on the highway heading in a northerly direction when Audomaro Chan suddenly made a left turn onto the other side of the highway, in an effort to enter the San Narciso Polyclinic Compound.

Police say that at the same time the truck driven by Erik Ermoff, 35, which was heading southbound slammed into the passenger side of Chan vehicle, pinning it and its occupant underneath and dragging them about 86 feet.

On Thursday ACP Joseph Myvett Head of the National Crimes Investigation Branch told the media that based on a preliminary investigation from the scene it appears that Chan did not clear traffic before he swerved onto the lane of incoming traffic. But nevertheless, Myvett confirmed that Ermoff has been served with a Notice of Intended Prosecution while a complete investigation is being carried out.

The Reporter tried to reach out to the family of the deceased for an interview but they indicated that they are too traumatized by the double deaths of their loved ones and were busy with funeral preparations and so would not be offering any comments to the media.
